Two things

After a couple days of some pretty tough workouts, I have a couple thoughts.

Nutrition is so amazingly important.  It sounds dumb to just repeat what we’re told all the time, but as a stubborn endurance athlete who’s trying to get better, it’s also about the last thing you want to hear (and adhere to).  Monday, we did Angie at CFC — that was just ok for me, I should have done better.  Tuesday, I ran a 2-mile time trial and although I didn’t beat my PR, I came close.  But I felt horrible all day, and I can only attribute that to how badly I ate on Monday night and all day Tuesday.  Monday night’s dinner was crap, and Tuesday morning I got up at 5 and all I had was a gel between then and like 10AM when I actually ate some breakfast.  All day I felt sluggish and ended up leaving work with a bit of a headache.  The headache went away the moment I finished dinner — oddly enough, the fruit that I had at dinner started to help me feel better.  That tells me I managed to get into an insulin imbalance, which means I ate like crap.  Crap.

This morning, we did a workout that most of the class didn’t finish, and I felt like I should have.  But again with the sluggish feeling when I woke up, that led me to slower runs than normal, and bad movements when I was trying to clean a 135-lb bar (which I am able to do, because I’ve done it before).  I ended up scaling the workout back to 95-lb from 135 and still not finishing, but I did manage to catch up to (and get ahead of some in) the group.

I really need to focus on eating post-workout, and getting better food (or food at all) into my apartment so that when dinner rolls around, I’ll have something to cook.  That’s going to be my mission today — go to the store and buy food, cook it for dinner, and make sure I have enough for the rest of the week.

As usual, Mark Sisson has some great points here about paleo and the needs of athletes.

(p.s. I have to say that “All My Friends” by LCD Soundsystem is one of my favorite songs from 2008)
