Looks like the active ingredient in that “Function” water is N-Acetyl-Cysteine (NAC), which is a proven hangover cure (directly counters the product of alcohol metabolism) as well as increases intracellular levels of Glutathione. I take 500mg NAC pills straight up after drinking, and never have hangovers anymore. It is a great supplement.

However, looks like you’re getting 26g of carbohydrates, probably from sugar, (this is only a little less than a can of coke) and no real benefits from that drink.

NAC pills are incredibly inexpensive, unlike the vanity water.. :)

you’re right, there’s a ton of sugar in there. i need to start reading the nutrition labels closer. i’m really curious about the prickly pear extract and the clearing of crap in your airways… i wonder if that’s BS or not.

It may or may not be crap. But if you look at the nutrient information, it says there is 200mg of proprietary “Prickly Pear Extract + NAC” per serving, so 400mg per bottle. Just the minimum recommended dosage for NAC for hangover cure is 500mg per drink (glass of beer, shot, etc).

Consuming 30g of sugar for an almost homeopathic amount of functional supplement seems to be a rather Faustian bargain to me. If Prickly Pear Extract is effective in general, is 200mg (Assuming a 50/50 PPE/NAC split) a therapeutic amount? Also, can the extract be purchased in larger volumes for cheaper than taking it 200mg at a time?

I am a nutritionaist and I live by this stuff. The reason it has sugar is because sugar is needed to replenish your blood sugar levels, which are affected by alcohol intake. As far as I know, they don’t really put anything in their drinks that aren’t necessary to the function the drink achieves. At least that is according to their website and some of the stuff I have read online about them. I originally found the company after I read an article in New York Magazine. All I know is it works for me. As for the Prickly Pear Extract, I read a study that proves it to be a natural anti-inflamatory … which is like taking Advil after you have been drinking. What you guys said about NAC is correct as well, but I am not sure where you got the 500mg number?

    Anyway, just my two cents.
